Henry is a Guatemala native, from the town of San Juan Atitán, living in Oakland, CA. Henry speaks Mam, Spanish and English, and has a passion for preserving Mayan language and traditions, as well as providing for the underserved Mayan populations in the U.S. He works as a Mam language interpreter, is co-founder of the Mayan dance and performance group, leads the Mayan soccer team, teaches a Mam language class, teaches a class for Mam students at Oakland High, works at the San Francisco public library, and coordinates volunteer, outreach, and service events for and with various Mayan communities. Above all he takes pride in celebrating the Mayan language and culture and invites you to do the same. Henry is an activist, a teacher, a volunteer, and an advocate for mistreated and underrepresented Mayan populations.

Tessa is a fifth year PhD student in linguistics at the UC Berkeley. Her dissertation research centers around the word and sentence structure of the Mam language, revealing its relevence for linguistic theory. As a linguist at Berkeley, she teaches undergraduate courses ranging from introductory level to upper division. She also teaches an unofficial Mam language class at Laney College with Henry Sales and Berkeley undergraduate Samba Kane. Tessa hopes to use her training in linguistics to serve the Mayan community in the Bay Area, as well as help amplify the voices of Mam people across the globe.
